Speaking at the U.S.-India Commercial Space Cooperation Conference, Mr. Garcetti highlighted that during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2023 state visit to the United States, he and President Joe Biden announced the opening of two additional consulates in India.
“Prime Minister Modi and President Biden announced that we would open not just one, but two more consulates in addition to our five existing consulates in India, with one of them being right here in Bengaluru. Although it typically takes 5-10 years to establish a consulate, I suggested we aim to get it done within the coming year. We are very excited about this,” Mr. Garcetti said.
In 2023, the U.S. revealed plans to open new consulates in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad (Gujarat), in addition to the consulates in Mumbai (Maharashtra), Kolkata (West Bengal), Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Hyderabad (Telangana), and the U.S. embassy in New Delhi.
India also announced plans to open a mission in Seattle, alongside the consulates in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, and Atlanta, and the embassy in Washington, D.C.
