Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has issued invitations to apply (ITAs) in the latest Express Entry draw.

In this draw, the department invited 964 candidates through a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)-only draw. Candidates needed a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 686 to be considered.

Today’s draw marks the eighth of a busy month for Express Entry. This month, draws have alternated between program-specific draws, such as the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and PNP, and category-based selection draws.

In category-based draws, most ITAs have been issued to candidates with French language proficiency, totaling 5,000 ITAs over two draws. On July 5, IRCC also issued 3,750 ITAs to healthcare candidates and 1,800 ITAs to trade occupations candidates on July 4.

High numbers of ITAs have also been issued in program-specific draws. As of July 18, IRCC has invited 6,300 Canadian Experience Class candidates and 2,311 PNP candidates. Many candidates in these programs already live and work in Canada as temporary residents. The return to program-specific draws on May 30, after a year without them, aligns with IRCC’s plan to hold more domestic draws.

In March, the department introduced a new goal to reduce and stabilize the number of temporary residents in Canada while meeting permanent resident targets outlined in the Immigration Levels Plan.

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is an application management system for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class, and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). These programs use the Comprehensive Ranking System to evaluate candidates based on human capital factors such as age, education, occupation, language abilities, and work experience. The higher the CRS score, the more likely candidates are to receive an ITA. Express Entry aims to facilitate faster processing for high-skilled candidates, with a service standard of six months for processing applications.

What is category-based selection?

To better target candidates with the skills or attributes Canada needs, IRCC introduced category-based selection draws in May 2023. The categories, chosen through consultations with stakeholders, include:

      • Healthcare occupations
      • Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
      • Trades occupations (e.g., carpenters, plumbers, contractors)
      • Transport occupations
      • Agriculture and agri-food occupations
      • French-language proficiency

These categories will remain in place for the rest of 2024 but may change next year.
