Beginning December 1, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will increase application and processing fees for various temporary resident applications, including visitor, worker, and student permits.
The fee changes will affect applications for:
- Restoration of temporary resident status (visitors, workers, and students);
- Authorization to return to Canada;
- Criminal rehabilitation (including serious criminality); and
- Temporary Resident Permits (TRPs).
While the updated fees have not yet been disclosed, applicants are advised to stay informed about the changes.

Paying the Correct Fees After December 1
If an applicant submits an application with the old fee before December 1, their submission will generally remain valid.
- Online Applications: Submissions are received instantly, ensuring the old fee is accepted if submitted before the fee change.
- Mailed Applications: There may be delays, but applications mailed before December 1 with the correct old fee and complete documents are unlikely to be rejected.
If additional payment is required due to a fee increase, IRCC will provide instructions for submitting the balance.
Steps to Pay the Fee Difference
If the new fee applies after an application has been submitted:
- Calculate the Fee Difference: Determine the difference between the old and new fees for all relevant applicants (including family members, if applicable).
- Make the Payment:
- Use IRCC’s online payment tool under the “Make an additional payment or pay other fees” category.
- Enter the total fee difference under “Quantity.”
- Payments can be made in one transaction or across multiple receipts.
- An IRCC account is required to complete the payment.
- Submit the Receipt: Follow IRCC’s instructions in their fee adjustment request to upload the payment receipt.
